We make it back to Park Place, unscathed, and I hand over the money with a generous tip. I scurry into the lobby and keep my head down. I don’t know if Christian will follow me here, or if he was able to beat me back here, but if he has, I want to avoid him at all costs.
I know I will have to face him eventually, he is going to want an explanation for why I was following him and why I ran. It looked suspicious as hell, but I panicked. I was thrown by the store, the opulence and exclusivity that I have never experienced before. Hayden Bros. were well known as the most expensive store in Australia, but the store here in New York made the Sydney store look like a run-of-the-mill suburban K-Mart.
And why was Christian there? Why was he talking to, who I presume to be, the store manager?
I gratefully make it through my suite door without having to make eye contact with anyone. I drop my bag and remove my coat as I mull over the enigma that is Christian Palmer. The first time I met him, I thought he was a flake, a rich playboy with nothing better to do than torture me. The more I get to know him, the less that image fits him.
I can no longer deny that I have feelings for the man. Big, messy, complicated feelings. Feelings that are dangerous for a girl like me, feelings that have already interfered with me doing my job. I can’t afford to fall for him, I can’t afford to let anything distract me from the job I was sent here do to.
“Freaking hell!” I yell at the universe. Why is this happening to me? The timing sucks the big one. Why couldn’t I have met Christian at another time, another place? Why couldn’t we have met when I wasn’t on the trail to reveal who his very mysterious boss is? Why did we have to be on opposite sides of this.
A knock at my door makes me jump. I know who it is, even without looking. I can tell by the angry knock and my body is already reacting to his nearness.
“Let me in Isobel,” he yells through the door.
I’m frozen where I stand. If I don’t let him in then I don’t have to deal with the fallout of falling for someone I can never have. If I don’t let him in, I can hold on to the fantasy a little bit longer.
“Come on, Izzy,” he says, his voice lower this time, “Let me in. We need to talk.”
It’s the nickname that gets to me. The fact that he’s using it means that maybe not all is lost. My feet take me across the room and I open the door. He stands there in all his male glory and the power and authority radiating off him is like a drug.
“Can I come in?”
I step back, opening the door wider so he can enter the room.
